Guest BookHere are some of the comments left by made by our guests: Excellent Apartment, July 2008 Antonio, Carmen & Family, Navarra, Spain Fully equipped apartment and very well situated. We found it very clean and tidy. The equipment is new and we felt like in our home. The deal with the owner is excellent, who is a very kind person and is paying you a lot of attention in order to have a nice stance. Chalet Whymper, July 2008 Isabelle & John, Coleraine, County Londonderry Just back after 2 week holiday in chalet Whymper -12th-26th July. We are in 55+ age. The apartment was excellent. The location was great as all the amenities were close by Les Houches-excellent choice especially with public transport easily accessible. We used the train most days and travelled as far as we could making good use of the carte d'hote (free travel). The apartment was exactly as described. Spotless -well equipped- very comfortable Owner has provided folders full of information on all activities. Owner was very helpful. We enjoyed easier walks and the cable cars. Would definitely recommend it and hope to return. Walking Holiday July 2008 Petra & Matthias, Germany Sonnige, zentral gelegene Ferienwohnung in Les Houches. Sehr empfehlenswert!!!!! Mountain Bike Holiday June 2008 Tia & Jay, Bucks My partner and I have just returned from a fantastic short break in Chalet Whymper and I will try to write a good, accurate, detailed review for anyone who is considering booking. Apartment - the apartment was exceptional. The rooms were well laid out with plenty of storage for, walking boots, bike gear, etc. The garage is secure for storing mountain bikes too. The kitchen was fully equipped with everything you would need. The owners have provided everything from utensils to cook books. There is a fridge with a freezer compartment along with a hob and oven. The lounge area had a sky box (bring your own card), a DVD player (with DVD's to choose from) and a radio/cd player. The sofa converts to a double sofa bed for extra guests. There are plenty of maps and guides of the area provided and a great pair of binoculars for watching the parachutes who jump in the area every morning! The bedroom had plenty of wardrobe space, along with an iron and ironing board (although ironing on holiday should be banned!). The lounge has a large balcony and there is a smaller one off the bedroom. Both have stunning views of the mountains and have tables and chairs for eating outside or just a cuppa in the morning. Les Houches - the apartment is about 50m from the Bellevue cable car which will take you up the mountain for either walking, mountain biking or general sight seeing. There is a little train at the top of the cable car which takes you to the glacier which is definitely worth a visit. Within Les Houches there are plenty of shops, bars, restaurants and a couple of good supermarkets so you will not have to travel far for supplies. There are also guide shops, bike shops, ski shops and a very good tourist information shop. Les Houches is about 20 minutes drive from Chamonix and about 30 minutes to the Mont Blanc Tunnel which takes you into Italy (it's much cheaper in Italy than France). It's 1 hour from Geneva airport or if you want to drive, about 8.5 hours from Calais. Mountain biking has just taken off in the area with tracks ranging from the easy to very technical. You can take your bike up the mountain on the cable car but you have to ask very nicely first! Then it's a big wahooo on the way down! One trip we would definitely recommend is the cable car from Chamonix up over Mont Blanc and the glacier. 4000m suspended on just a wire! This is absolutely breathtaking. We'll be back with friends next year for sure. Walking & Climbing Holiday June 2008 Mike W, Surrey I've stayed at a number of French Alpine apartments in Chamonix, Tignes and Val D'Isere, in winter and in summer. This one has been the best by far. The description given by the owners is spot on. It is modern, spotlessly clean, easily accessible by road, train and to the Les Houches lift system. The local train and bus network is very efficient, and means that it is possible to park the car in the garage and not use it until going home again. The apartment is amazingly well stocked - the kitchen has far more in than my kitchen at home! Before going, I was in regular communication with Janet, who gave a level of information on the local walks and attractions that I suspect only the local Office De Tourism could beat (which is only a few hundred metres away from the apartment anyway!), and they wouldn't be able to give the personal recommendation that Janet did (recommendations that I can now say were well recommended, especially Le Lac Blanc walk). Les Houches is nice village with astounding views of the Aguille Vert end of the Mont Blanc Massif, which can all be seen from the balconies of the apartment. The sunset on these mountains is really worth seeing. I didn't find any cafes or restaurants that I didn't like in the village, Chamonix or on the mountainsides. All the people I met were friendly and willing to talk (although this may have been as excuse for a rest whilst walking!!). As well as walking, I would recommend mountain biking (there are trails of all abilities and the lifts will take bikes up to the top no problem), rock climbing (I only went outdoors as the weather was so good, but the indoor place looked good on the brochure), wildlife spotting (get out on the first lift before there are many people around and walk the trails through the Aiguilles Rouges reserve), experiencing the affects of altitude on the Midi, white water rafting through the middle of Chamonix town centre and just getting out to enjoy the fresh air and relaxed atmosphere of the Chamonix valley. Would I recommend this apartment to a friend? Well, I would go back there, so I definitely would recommend it. Perfect Apartment, Perfect Holiday June 2008 Vanessa & Ben, Bristol Our stay at Chalet Whymper was absolutely wonderful! The apartment description is wholly accurate and in fact it was a delight that it was so well equipped and furnished. The views from both balconies were wonderful, especially the sun on the mountains from the bedroom balcony in the morning. The apartment was spotless and very well maintained. The owners were incredibly helpful before our trip with lots of handy instructions for arrival, activities and also local amenities. We would have no hesitation in recommending this fantastic apartment and location to anyone wanting to enjoy a break in the Alps. Mountain Biking Holiday May 2008 Ciaran, Baldock The chalet is superb. It has everything you need for a self catering stay. So many times I have rented self-catering to find the kitchen hasn't got what you need. This one is fantastic. The bedroom is nice and the storage facilities are great. There are two balconies (bedroom and lounge) for breathing in the Alpine air in the morning. Les Houches is a friendly village with plenty of shops and restaurants. The Carte d'Hote for transport in the area is really useful for free bus and train travel. Chamonix is the next town and has plenty of things to do and places to spend your money. The MTB trails around Les Houches are spectacular. We went when the lifts were closed so we had plenty of climbing to do; but the views make up for it. The tourist office has brochures on the local trails; but the Chalet also has plenty of maps and guides to get you started. We had a fantastic week in Les Houches; and we can't wait to get back there. Happy Holidays May 2008 Paul & Helen, Weston Super Mare We had a very enjoyable stay in Chalet Whymper. We didn't go for skiing, we just wanted to enjoy the scenery and weren't disappointed. The L'Aiguille du Midi and Mer De Glace were just amazing. The chalet was first class and had everything we needed. We really appreciated the guide books that Janet provided - they were very helpful in planning where to visit, and we had some great walks as well. All in all a great holiday! Skiing with Family April 2008 Tim & Sheila, London Our holiday at Chalet Wymper was excellent. The Chalet was very well equipped and comfortable. It has views of the mountains too. It was well located for the ski lifts. The only minor complaint is it's not easiest place to get into and the garage is small. The owners had prepared detailed instructions of how to use all appliances and prepared a large folder on local amenities. The apartment was very clean. There were good restaurants and shops nearby and Chamonix is only 15 mins away. It was possible even in early April to ski back to 50 metres from the apartment. As a further point I arranged private ski lessons with ESF in Les Houches and these proved to be very high quality. Skiing March 2008 Anna & Nigel, West Sussex We had an excellent 5 day break at Chalet Whymper. Fast efficient transfer from airport courtesy of Chamonix Express. Excellent directions provided. The apartment was great, well equipped and beautifully furnished with lots of useful storage space. Milk in fridge and wine were very welcome on arrival. We liked the village which had friendly bars and an excellent supermarket. The skiing was excellent with cable car within a few minutes walk of apartment, as well as good bus connections to much more. We will definitely be going back! Family Skiing Holiday March 2008 Mark & Joanne, Loughborough Les Houches is an ideal place for family skiing and the location of the apartment is ideal for access to the ski lifts, local shops, restaurants and public transport. The apartment itself is superb and offers every comfort that you would expect at home. There is plenty of room for a family of four and we would have no hesitation in recommended this property as a holiday rental. Skiing March 2008 Stephen & Lucie, Surrey Chalet Whymper is an excellent, furnished to a high standard property with everything required to make staying there as comfortable and relaxing as possible. Well located for access throughout the Chamonix valley. The owners have provided excellent customer service with plenty of useful information in the Chalet and via email before travelling. I would strongly recommend this property to both family and friends and would consider returning again one day. Family Skiing Holiday February 2008 Mike, Katie & Charlie, Loughborough I'm a seasoned snowboarder and decided to take my wife and our son who is 6 for their first toe in the water of ski life, the apartment has everything you need and more. The walk to the shops is five minutes and there are two adequate restaurants a stone throw in the other direction. Ski hire is across the river bridge so that's 2 mins away and the lifts are available from there. By my own belief on a snow covered day you could ski to it (through some trees). Well it'd be a good crack to have a go, but on a snow covered day you could at least ski down the road to the lift. Great web site too! Loads of info and how to... Just avoid alpinecabs.com who sent us an email 2 days before the end of our holiday to tell us they couldn't take us even though I had a booking reference. To the rescue were mountain drop offs - see chaletwhymper website for details about transfers. Family Skiing Holiday February 2008 Sean & daughters, Dorchester I have just returned from Chalet Whymper with my two teenage daughters where we had a very good weeks skiing. The Chalet is very well equipped very comfortable and very clean. Having a washer dryer is a great bonus. The Chalet is on the main road; there is however minimal noise. The bus service runs just across the road with access to Chamonix and other ski resorts in the Chamonix valley. The ski slopes are with a short walk as are many good restaurants, ski hire shops and a local super market. It is very easy to manage without a car. Its location is ideal for skiing in the winter and alpine breaks in the summer. The description provided on the web site is accurate and the owner provides very good information and service, I would definitely recommend this property to a friend. Long Weekend 1st February 2008 Lucie & Jason, Ystrad Mynach, Wales What an absolutely lovely way to experience our first skiing holiday. The apartment is just beautiful, luxurious and so well equipped. Janet and her family have gone to great lengths to ensure their guests have everything they need - even down to DVD's for you to watch. Janet provided us with directions to the apartment which were brilliant, didn't go wrong once. The apartment is just as you see it in the photos and the location is perfect, 2 min walk to the ski school, 3 min walk to Ski lift, its peaceful and the views are amazing. We were skiing after just 2 hours of lessons and after a further half day lesson we were tackling the big lifts and blue runs. Only down side is that we had to come home and go back to work. I would say that this apartment is ideal for ski trips or outdoor walking/mountain biking etc. Janet was extremely friendly and gave us plenty of advice prior to our visit. If you're considering booking this apartment, then do so - you'll not be disappointed. Thank you Janet, we'll definitely be back soon! Lucie & Jason.
Week commencing 19th Jan 2008 John & Morag, Liverpool Thanks for an enjoyable week at Chalet Whymper. This is an excellent modern apartment one minute's walk from the Bellevue cable car in Les Houches. There are several bars and two good supermarkets nearby along with good transport links to Chamonix (15 mins away by bus). There is also a night bus from Chamonix 9.30 pm and 11.20 pm departing across the road from the Hotel Alpina (2 euros pp). Les Houches is a great ski area particularly for beginners, more advanced skiers will probably find two or three days here is enough, but the apartment is well positioned for getting to the other ski areas of Chamonix. Overall a great holiday. Recommended. John.
Bauer's New Year 2007-8 Vanda of Angmering, West Sussex. January 2008 We had a fabulous New Year. As there were five of us, (two grandparents, my sister and I, and our nephew Ben aged 7) it was a little cosy in the apartment but as long as we all kept tidy, organised and to a well-rehearsed routine, it all worked perfectly. The apartment is very well appointed and there are ample instructions for the washing machine, dishwasher, flat screen TV, DVD etc. It's only a v short walk to Bellevue, the closest lift, although Grandad and Ben used the frequent ski bus to get to ski school at Prarion. Eating out is very easy although we ate in most of the time, shopping at the supermarket which is about 10minutes walk away. The kitchen area is superbly equipped - and the timer for boiled eggs works perfectly at altitude!
Christmas 2007 in the Mountains Roger, Clare, Bec & Em of West Sussex. December 2007 We had an idyllic stay in chalet whymper over the Christmas period. The apartment itself was first class, with every comfort that could be required. There were four of us staying and the layout of the facilities was such that there was never any sense of overcrowding (which has been our experience in the past at other ski apartments that apparently can accommodate 4 guests). The convenience of having a 'proper' kitchen was most welcome. Having the dedicated and secure garage took away the stress of constantly needing to search for a parking space and worrying about the security of the vehicle. The location of the apartment was excellent, close to all amenities, lifts and slopes and just by a bus stop, meant that getting around the Chamonix Valley was not a problem. Overall a first class holiday.
