Thankfully Les Houches village has retained its Haute Savoie architecture avoiding the awful modern structures which characterise so many French ski resorts.
The heart of the village just 600 metres away (turning right out of Chalet Whymper) includes a Baroque church in its centre, post office, bank, large supermarket, museum and tourist office. The square also sees a weekly street market. Further up the road there are more bars/ restaurants and the outdoor ice skating rink (winter only).

Turning left out of Chalet Wymper within 150 metres there are three good restaurants, three bars (two also serve food), a fromagerie, a boulangerie, a newsagents and le Refuge de Payot (selling regional food and wine plus complete meals). There's even an indoor climbing wall if you haven't exhausted yourselves on the slopes!
